The Salso River Valley and the Origins of Valle del Salso
The Salso River—also known as the Imera Meridionale—flows from the Madonie Mountains through the provinces of Enna, Caltanissetta, and Agrigento before reaching the Licata plain. Its salty waters have shaped a land that is both rugged and resilient. It was among these dusty trails and Sicilian sierras that I encountered my first Cane Corso, sparking the vision that would become the foundation of Valle del Salso Kennel.
1974 – The First Encounter with Italian Mastiffs
My journey with Italian mastiffs began in 1974. In Naples, I purchased Giada, a striking grey brindle Neapolitan Mastiff. Shortly after, in the historic markets of Palermo, I found Nerone, a powerful black brindle male. These two dogs were my introduction to the nobility and strength of Italy's ancient molosser breeds.
The Early Years of Valle del Salso
While my love for mastiffs had deep roots, my true passion for the Cane Corso breed began in the late 1990s. The founding dogs of Valle del Salso were Attila and Etna. Attila was discovered abandoned in the countryside near Agrigento and was officially registered as a first-generation Cane Corso in the Italian Stud Book in 2001. Etna, on the other hand, came from a litter of twelve spirited Cane Corso puppies born in a mechanic's garage in Palermo’s historic center. She was wild, fearless, and instantly stole my heart—the beginning of a lifelong journey with this exceptional breed.
A Turning Point in Our Cane Corso Breeding Program
A major step forward in our selective breeding program came with the introduction of Dyrium bloodlines, thanks to the collaboration with Luigi di Rienzo, a key figure in the breed's modern development. Nik, from the Valle dei Lord bloodline, became our first Italian Champion Cane Corso and a foundational stud in our kennel. His legacy continues to influence the temperament, health, and conformation of our current generation of Cane Corso dogs.
